About this picture.
For those of you who like to know the story behind a picture, here’s the story behind this one.
Honestly, I didn’t even know these birds were a thing until a few years ago. And if I had seen a pic I would have assumed they were from some far away exotic place. As it happens, the faraway exotic place where I took this picture was… ah… just outside of Murray Bridge near Monarto. Because every Summer they fly from up north down to South Australia to enjoy our lovely warm weather and make babies before nicking off at the start of Autumn. They’re what’s known as an ‘aerial insectivore’ which pretty much explains the name, although they don’t just eat bees, they also chow down on butterflies, moths and dragonflies. Fun fact: they dig tunnels up to a metre long to nest in.
