About this picture.
For those of you who like to know the story behind a picture, here’s the story behind this one.
I absolutely bloody love these little birds but geez I find them tricky to shoot. They are super small, super quick and not always up for a photo. One place I like to go to try see them is Arid Lands Botanic Gardens just outside of Port Augusta, South Australia. Sometimes I see them there, sometimes not. This one day, I was walking around like a complete goober in full camo and I could hear them chirping, so I was on. There were a few tourists around who probably thought I was a complete knobhead (they are correct). or a serial killer (not correct), but I wanted that shot so bad so I stayed out there anyway and eventually managed to get a few shots and this was one of them.
In 2023 I entered a slightly different version of this shot (a wider crop and a more raw, flatter image as per the rules) into the Australia Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year comp and was lucky enough to snag a finalist in the Animals in Nature category. Not gonna lie or pretend from the get go I didn’t know I had absolutely fuck all chance of actually winning, I mean, check out some of the other pics, but just to be included was bloody excellent.
So this is your chance to order the ‘director’s cut’ version of this photo.
