About this picture.
For those of you who like to know the story behind a picture, here’s the story behind this one.
In those Jurassic Park films they had a dinosaur called a ‘Velociraptors’ and this isn’t that because it’s a bird. Obviously. But it is a raptor, or ‘bird of prey’, which consists of things like eagles, falcons, hawks, buzzards, harriers, kites, vultures and… kestrels! Like this one. Depending on who you talk to this is either a Nankeen Kestrel or an Australian Kestrel and you say tomato I say tomato and that totally doesn’t work unless you say it out loud. They have been described as ‘delightfully fluffy killers’ aaaaaand alrighty then. It’s one of the world’s smallest kestrels and rather than using speed, it hunts using suspension – which gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘the suspense is killing me’. Basically they hover while they’re looking for lunch and they’re one of the only birds of prey that do that. I shot this one at Red Banks Conservation Park not far from Burra in South Australia. Quite a nice place to go for a quick squizz if you’re ever out that way.
