The other day I saw a teeth whitening ad, and I thought, “who the fuck gets to decide what colour our teeth ‘should’ be? That bright white is beautiful, and the colour they actually, naturally are, is not?”.

This morning while I was having breakfast and the local ‘spoggies’, (House Sparrows), were tucking in to someone’s left over breakfast, I noticed what fine looking birds they actually are and wondered “who the fuck gets to decide what kind of birds are beautiful? Is it based on how colourful they are? How rare they are? What?”.

And that got me thinking “who the fuck decides what colour skin is beautiful? What kind of hair is beautiful? What body weight is beautiful?”. And more importantly, “how many people have to think those things, to agree with them, buy into them, for them to be ‘true’?”.

What’s the ‘tipping point’ for when a few people’s, or company’s, opinions, usually with some sort of vested interest, become ‘gospel’?

And why the fuck do so many of us fall for it and believe this shit at all?

Because… Fuck. That.

PIC: The above pic is of some Spiny Cheeked Honeyeaters and was taken at a waterhole in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. They weren’t the rarest, most colourful or even my personal favourite birds that I saw on that trip, but still quite beautiful. Their own kind of beautiful. 🙂
